XF Details, Net VF20.</B></I> Briggs 1-A. While the rustic and often crude production methods of the Carson City Mint have endeared it to modern numismatists, they have also had a deleterious effect on many of its surviving pieces. An unfortunate example is the elusive 1871-CC quarter that we highlight here. In a vain effort to shorten production time, the Carson City Mint often struck their early quarter issues from pure Comstock Lode silver. In direct contravention to the government's approved composition of 90% and 10% copper, these quarters were unable to withstand the rigors of the elements and widespread circulation. The current specimen unfortunately illustrates the wisdom of the government's mandate to include copper in the composition of all silver coins. Both the obverse and the reverse display rough, pitted surfaces that owe their existence to extensive porosity and corrosion. In addition, numerous scratches are seen over the obverse, and the coin has been cleaned in an attempt to "improve" its appearance. The faces still, however, display all major design elements and exhibit lavender-gray coloration throughout. Despite its obvious problems, this is an important representation of this scarce CC-mint issue that should be of obvious importance to specialists. </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed>No Prior Data Recorded </TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium.
