1871-CC $20 XF45 PCGS. Attractive yellow-gold surfaces
1871-CC $20 XF45 PCGS. Attractive yellow-gold surfaces are accented by pale olive overtones. This is an excellent, lightly circulated example of the second rarest Carson City Mint double eagle. A few light abrasions are consistent with the grade, and are the result of its brief exposure to circulation in Western commerce during the latter part of the 19th century. The substantial population of certified pieces does not tell of the rarity and importance of this double eagle, due to numerous resubmissions of a much smaller number of coins. Nearly all examples are in lower grades than this specimen. Only one similar quality example is held by the Smithsonian Institution. While a couple Mint State examples and a few more AU examples have survived to this day, such coins are clearly the exception and not the rule when it comes to 1871-CC double eagles. In his Double Eagle Red Book, Dave Bowers commented: "These pieces circulated extensively, and most show extensive wear and, often, damage." Fortunately for today's collector, the present example shows neither of those characteristics. Population: 36 in 45, 30 finer (10/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
