<B>1871-CC $20 --Altered Surface--NCS. AU Details.</B></I> The 1871-CC is overshadowed by its legendary 1870-CC predecessor, but is significant as the second rarest Carson City double eagle. It becomes very rare as Mint State is approached, since PCGS has yet to certify an example above AU55. The present piece has only a trace of wear, but the surfaces are glossy and lackluster from a cleaning. A couple of faint marks are noted on the upper right obverse field. Well struck except for the first obverse star, and certain to be of interest to the rare gold specialist.
