1871-CC $20 AU58 NGC. Even though it is not an impossible rarity like its 1870 predecessor, the 1871 double eagle is elusive in all grades, and a condition rarity in grades finer than this piece. Deep honey-gold surfaces exhibit nearly full luster with excellent mint brilliance on the reverse. Both sides have light abrasions that are expected on these coins that circulated in the rough-and-tumble West.
Rusty Goe discusses the distribution of these coins in The Mint on Carson Street: "It is believed that the largest percentage of double eagles minted in Carson City during the first few years of operations remained in Nevada, at least for a while. Years later, quantities of 'CC' $20 gold pieces made their way to foreign lands as export demand increased. The early 'CC' issues that did indeed circulate locally acquired heavy bagmarks and surface damage, greatly marring their appearance."
Mint State pieces are extremely rare with just two or three known. These are followed by a few AU55 and AU58 grade pieces including this aesthetically pleasing coin. The abrasions are certainly the result of circulation in Nevada, but the remarkable overall quality suggests that some kind sole rescued this piece before it was lost or exported. The finest example certified by PCGS grades just AU55 and five finer pieces have been examined by NGC, including a remarkable MS64 grade piece. Census: 19 in 58, 5 finer (7/07).

Coin Engraver: James B.
