1871-CC $20 AU58 NGC. Variety 1-A. Second only to the 1871-CC[$20] AU58 NGC.
1871-CC<$20> AU58 NGC. Variety 1-A. Second only to the 1870-CC among Carson City double eagles, with a total population of 200-250 coins in all grades. Most of these coins, of course, are VF-XF, but a surprising number (45-55 pieces) are known in the lower grades of AU. At the AU58 level, this qualifies as a Condition Census piece. As with several other important CC gold pieces in this auction, this particular coin has been off the market so long it is unknown to the present generation of collectors. From the look of the flips and the companies represented on several of the flips, this collection must have been formed in the late 1940s and 1950s. One added bonus to this coin having come out of an old-time collection is that it has not been dipped or "improved" in any way. It is in the same state today as it was when this collection was assembled. The surfaces show several light abrasions on the cheek of Liberty and numerous small ones peppered over each side. The only other mentionable "flaw" is a grease stain that was struck into the reverse above the eagle's right (facing) wing. A significant amount of mint luster remains on this high grade '71-CC, and each side shows medium orange-gold coloration.
From The Lewis (Tahoe) Collection.
