1871-CC $20 AU55 NGC. Winter 1-A, the only known dies. Production of Double Eagles at the Carson City Mint entered its second year in 1871. Produced to the extent of 17,387 pieces, the '71-CC is the rarest CC-mint Twenty after the first-year 1870-CC. It is also the second rarest CC-mint Double Eagle in high grades. Of the 200-250 pieces believed extant, no more than 55 qualify for an AU grade (per Winter and Halperin, 2001). The present representative is typically abraded for the date with numerous small and moderate handling marks on both sides. These features, however, do not inhibit appreciation of the remaining luster, which is mostly satiny in sheen with semi-prooflike tendencies in the fields. The color is a pleasing orange-copper shade, and the strike, while not full, is sharper than that usually encountered on survivors of the 1870-CC delivery. A shallow graze behind Liberty's mouth should help to trace the pedigree of this low end Condition Census example. We last offered a similarly graded 1871-CC Double Eagle as lot 4055 in our January 2002 FUN Signature Sale. That coin, part of the Eagle Collection, brought $13,225.From the Ashland City Collection.
