1871-CC $10 AU55 NGC. Winter 1-A. One of just 8,085 pieces produced, this coin is also one of no more than 100 examples believed extant. The vast majority of surviving 1871-CC Eagles grade VF or lower, with XF examples scarce, AU representatives rare, and Mint State pieces rarer still. Coins that grade as fine as AU55 easily qualify for Condition Census standing. We have handled only two 1871-CC Tens in AU55: 1. Ex: West Coast dealer; Eastern dealer (8/1997); Charley Tuppen Collection; Long Beach Signature Sale--The Warren Miller Collection (Heritage, 10/1995), lot 6358, where it realized $30,800; Warren Miller Collection; Delaware Valley Rare Coins (1991). Graded AU55 PCGS at the time of our sale, the coin now resides in an MS60 NGC holder. It is the # 2 example on the 2001 Winter / Halperin Condition Census. 2. Ex: Long Beach Signature Sale (Heritage, 2/2000), lot 6763, where it realized $14,950; Heritage Rare Coin Galleries (6/1999). The present example, and identifiable by a nearly vertical abrasion in the left reverse field and a smattering of staccato-like abrasions in the right reverse field above the top arrowhead. This coin is tied for the # 4 position on the 2001 Winter / Halperin Condition Census. There is a remarkable amount of luster on both sides of this coin for an issue whose survivors, according to Winter, are typically "worn to the point that they show little--if any--original mint luster." Glowing semi-reflectivity is evident at most angles, particularly in the more protected areas around the devices and toward the borders. The color is attractive with alternating green-gold and orange-gold shadings. There is a little bit of roughness in the planchet between the 8 and 7 in the date, and the number of light to moderate abrasions is consistent with the assigned grade. From the Ashland City Collection.
