Almost all Philadelphia mint half eagles struck in the 1870s are scarce to rare. This is due to their low mintage, high attrition, and, today, expanding collector base. 1871 is typical of the series in which only 3,230 pieces were minted. The average grade that is offered, when it is offered, tends to hover around Very Fine. Mint State quality half eagles this year are virtually unobtainable. We expect to see a lot of stirring in chairs and then active bidding on it when the time comes.
