1871 $5 AU55 PCGS. Double eagles were the preferred denomination for gold reserves and export, and gold coins did not generally circulate (except in the far West) in the 1870s. Hence, the 1871 half eagle had a small mintage of 3,200 pieces. Numismatists of the day ignored the issue, and those few who collected gold probably purchased one of the 30 proofs produced. The combination of low mintage and collector indifference resulted in a significant rarity. This nicely struck piece displays light apricot toning and considerable radiant luster. A short pinscratch beneath the beak provides a reference for future auction appearances. Population: 9 in 55, 10 finer (1/08).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
