1871<3CS> MS68 NGC. This exceptional coin shows no traces of the usual abrasions or hairlines so often seen on three cent silver pieces. Close examination with a magnifier could convince the viewer that even at the MS68 level this coin is undergraded. As stated in the description for the MS67 above, only 3,400 pieces were struck of the 1871. Like that MS67 coin also, this piece displays very bright, highly reflective fields--apparently an early striking. While it is always difficult to say for certain with toned coins, it appears that the devices are heavily frosted. So, is this coin actually a proof? Absolutely not. The horizontal lines on the shield on the obverse, the knot in the bow on the reverse as well as the reverse stars lack the absolute clarity of strike that a double-struck proof would possess. Each side is toned in moderate shades of rose and turquoise, with different configurations of the color on obverse and reverse. The population data indicates that this piece is tied with one other MS68, also an NGC coin. But we have to wonder if that second coin might be a resubmission of this piece that has not been removed from the Census Report.
