1871<3CS> MS64 NGC. The central areas are brilliant with wisps and blushes of gold and blue at the borders. Here we have another example of a borderline case: are we looking at a proof or a prooflike business strike? The presence of frosty devices and mirrorlike fields suggests a proof designation, while certain strike characteristics, i.e. softness in the horizontal lines in the azure portion of the obverse shield and softness at the bow binding the bundle of arrows on the reverse, suggests that this is actually a prooflike business strike. Another factor that suggests this piece's business strike status is that the reverse shows a texture in some areas that is actually intermediate between mirrorlike and satiny. A mere 4,360 trimes were minted in 1871, and high-grade business strikes often command bids that are higher than those for proofs of a corresponding grade. Regarding the mintage, the Guidebook lists a total of 4,360 coins while Walter Breen's Complete Encyclopedia places the quantity at 100 less pieces.
