1871 $3 MS64 PCGS. The never-popular three dollar denomination suffered a drawn-out demise, with the last 29 years of coinage at the Philadelphia Mint only and just two issues with more than 10,000 pieces coined. At 1,300 business strikes produced, the 1871 is one of the many issues that embody the concept of a nominal mintage. This Choice wheat-gold example is one of the best-preserved survivors. The luster is strong and partially prooflike, unsurprising given the low mintage, and the strike is adequate. The overall appearance is clean, and only some small, scattered marks keep this example from a Gem grade. NGC has graded no pieces finer, and the only example awarded a higher grade by PCGS is a solitary Superb Gem (11/06).

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
