1871 $3 AU55 ANACS. According to Bowers, in the early 1900s Thomas L. Elder--a well known New York coin dealer, advertiser, and producer of self-promotional medals, among other pastimes--disseminated to bank tellers a list of coins for which he would pay a premium. Undoubtedly, the survival of lightly circulated examples of this low-mintage issue, produced to the extent of only 1,300 business strikes plus 30 proofs, owes its existence to numismatic pioneers such as Elder. This pretty, Choice AU yellow-gold piece understandably retains a considerable portion of its prooflike surface on both sides. The 18 is more lightly struck than the 71, but otherwise the piece is distraction-free.
From The Jones Beach Collection.

Shipping: Coin/Currency (view shipping information)
