<B>1871 $20 MS60 NGC.</B></I> The 1871 is rare in Mint State for several reasons. It has a mintage of only 80,120 pieces. It was struck after the famous 1857 to 1865 gold-laden shipwrecks. It was struck prior to the large-scale export of U.S. gold to foreign bank holdings. Few collectors could afford to set aside twenty dollar pieces in 1871, and those who had the ability to do so selected proofs instead of business strikes. This sun-gold example is typically abraded on the left obverse, and displays light hairlines on the reverse field.
