<B>1871 $20 AU55 PCGS.</B></I> The 1871 double eagle is clearly an underrated coin. Out of a relatively small mintage of 80,120 coins, the lowest of all Type Two Philadelphia issues, few coins survive in AU condition or better. Those examples that are extant are often found with abraded surfaces or other impairments. The numbers attest to this fact: As of (6/07), PCGS has certified 24 pieces in AU55, with only 15 finer. However, one must assume that the population figures are artificially high due to resubmissions. The current example is only slightly abraded and displays honey-gold color over lustrous surfaces.
