1871[$2 1/2] PR66 Cameo NGC.
1871<$2 1/2> PR66 Cameo NGC. Ex: Pittman. A razor-sharp premium Gem that has flashy reflective fields and gentle tan-gold patina. A couple of freckles of golden-brown color on the left side of the shield and near Liberty's hair bun provide pedigree markers, since the surfaces are essentially free from contact. From different dies than the business strikes of 1871, which have the date lower and better centered between the bust and denticles. In addition, tiny die lumps and lines (as made) are on the bust near the truncation and identify the proof obverse die. The dies are moderately rotated clockwise.

Only 30 proofs were struck. David Akers states in the Pittman catalog description "It is my opinion that the 1871 is one of the three rarest Proof Quarter Eagles from 1860-1907 along with the 1861 and 1878... only 10-12 Proof 1871 Quarter Eagles can be accounted for today." This is the first proof 1871 that either Heritage Numismatic Auctions or its two predecessor firms (Steve Ivy Numismatic Auctions and New England Rare Coin Auctions) has offered at auction. As of (7/04), NGC has certified six pieces in all grades, with the present piece tied with one other for the honor of highest graded by that service. PCGS has encapsulated an additional four pieces, none among which have achieved or surpassed the PR65 grade. Opportunities to acquire an 1871 specimen of this quality are likely to emerge no more than once per decade.
Ex: John Jay Pittman Collection, Part Two (David Akers, 5/98), lot 1824, which realized $37,950. Earlier, Pittman had purchased it from New Netherlands Coin Co. for $42.50 on June 8, 1948.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
