1871<$10> Ten Dollar, Judd-1174, Pollock-1316, R.8, PR66 Cameo NGC. A regular die trials piece for the Liberty ten dollar. Struck in aluminum with a reeded edge. All regular issue 1871 denominations are known in aluminum format, these are all either High R.7 or R.8. This suggests a few denomination sets were purposely created, perhaps for presentation purposes, but more likely for sale to wealthy local collectors. The 1994 Pollock reference lists two known pieces; one is the Farouk specimen, which appeared in the famous Sotheby's 1954 "Palace Collection." The other piece was lot 434 in the March 1974 Pine Tree auction, later in the Paramount sale of April 1977 as lot 181. The recent Bowers update of Judd indicates no later auction appearance for Judd-1174. This needle-sharp and essentially immaculate piece exhibits noticeable cameo contrast and has good field reflectivity.
