<B>1870-S $5 AU58 NGC.</B></I> The mintage of 17,000 1870-S half eagles apparently entered circulation at the time of issue. There are no known examples of the date in Mint State (Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth, 2006; and NGC/PCGS population reports). A mere three AU58 coins have been graded, all by NGC (7/07).<BR> Variegated peach-gold and mint-green surfaces display a blush or two of apricot, and retain a fair amount of luster. A well directed strike leaves good definition on the design features. The mintmark, which is often weak on this issue, is exceptionally bold on this particular example.
