1870-S<$5> AU55 PCGS. The 1870-S coinage is one of those dates that inspires instant recognition in astute numismatists. The 1870-S half dime and three dollar are unique, the 1870-S gold dollar was the last struck at a branch mint, and the 1870-S five dollar has long been acknowledged as a true rarity. Only 17,000 pieces were produced, and most examples found grade about XF45. The date is unknown in Mint State. This piece boasts considerable prooflikeness under the light, grade-consistent field chatter noted on each side. The peach-gold surfaces are appealing, despite the soft strike noted on the eagle's neck, the fletchings, and Liberty's lovelock. The mintmark is well impressed, unlike some specimens seen. This piece is among the seven finest at PCGS, with none higher (9/06).
