1870-S $20 MS62 NGC. While the surfaces are lightly abraded, this lovely yellow-gold piece is fully lustrous with excellent aesthetic appeal. There are no individual marks of any significance. This is an underrated rarity at the MS62 grade level, with none certified in any higher grades! This news is actually rather surprising for an issue with a mintage that nearly reached 1 million coins, and is essentially considered a common date in the various circulated grades. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth suggest that most of the mintage was exported or otherwise destroyed, although large quantities of various dates that were formerly exported have been returned to this country in recent years. That is obviously not the case for this particular date. Rather, it is more likely that most or all of the mintage was released into circulation where they were extensively used, as indicated by the number of well worn examples that still exist.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
