1870-S<10C> MS65 NGC. A scarce issue with only 50,000 pieces struck. Most of the business strikes entered circulation immediately, with only a small surviving population in high grades. The Greer Seated Liberty dime reference (1992) comments, "A semi-key that is very scarce in any grade and rare above VF. Ranks closely with the 1856-S and 1859-S as the 2nd rarest S mint behind the 1885-S." This specimen shows thick, frosted mint luster that is a bit more prominent on the reverse, while light, lilac-gray patination coats both sides. There is light strike weakness on the upper left wreath on the reverse, but elsewhere the strike is pleasingly bold, especially on Liberty, and her face and gown details are well detailed. None of the few light abrasions are worthy of singular mention, and all are consistent with the Gem assessment. An opportunity to acquire an example of the legendary 1870 San Francisco coinage in this high a grade does not occur often. The total population at both services is nine coins, with two graded finer (3/06).
