1870<S$1> PR64 ANACS. The proof 1870 is scarcer than the four preceding issues in this series. This is curious, since this date is tied with the 1861 for second highest mintage honors (1,000 pieces) in the proof Seated Dollar series. Apparently, proof Silver Dollars were not as popular with collectors in 1870 as they were in other years of this era, and many coins may have been melted as unsold. This fortunate survivor is toned in overlapping swirls of golden, sunset-magenta, and electric-blue iridescence with a swath of green color at the upper right reverse border. Both sides are well cameoed in finish, although not so designated on the ANACS holder, and are free of singularly distracting hairlines. A couple of minor scuffs are noted in the right obverse field.
