1870<S$1> PR63 PCGS. The 1870 is a deceptive issue among With Motto Seated dollars. Although it has a mintage of 1,000 proofs, it is nowhere near as available as one might believe, lagging far behind other dates such as the 1867, which had a mintage of only 625 pieces. Which leads one to speculate whether a number of proofs might have been melted as unsold at year's end. This specimen displays light grayish-gold patina with accents of steel-blue around the margins, which is especially extensive around the reverse borders. Nice definition characterizes the design features, and there are no significant contact marks to be found. The number of scattered hairlines is consistent with the PR63 designation.
From The Dr. John L. Pellegrini Collection of Liberty Seated Dollars.
