1870 S$1 MS63 PCGS. This lightly toned older hold
1870<S$1> MS63 PCGS. This lightly toned older holder Silver Dollar has impressive mint luster and a penetrating strike. The upper portion of the obverse shield is abraded, and the right obverse field has a few light marks. The reverse is die doubled throughout IN GOD WE TRUST and on the left (facing) wing feathers; the obverse die is identified by mint-made die 'rust' throughout the waist. Although the mintage of 415,000 business strikes is seemingly sufficient for Mint State examples to be available, such is not the case. It is likely there are less than 200 survivors in Uncirculated grades, about half of which are in MS60 to MS62 grades. Select examples are rare, and are strongly contested. Population: 20 in 63, 18 finer (6/05).
From The Dr. John L. Pellegrini Collection of Liberty Seated Dollars.
