1870-CC<S$1> MS63 PCGS. Variety 2-E. Deep golden-brown and aqua-blue colors drape this unmarked first year Carson City Dollar. The strike is good, if not completely brought up on Liberty's hair and the left (facing) claw. The 1870-CC Dollar was the first issue produced by the Carson City Mint, which soon concentrated instead on the Half Dollar denomination. Half Dollars were favored since silver depositors received greater face value in return; the tenor of the Half Dollar (but not the Silver Dollar) was reduced in 1853. While just 11,758 pieces were struck, this small mintage is actually much greater than the combined production of the 1871-CC, 1872-CC, and 1873-CC Seated Dollars. Thus, Carson City type collectors are obligated to select an 1870-CC for their holdings. As of (10/05), PCGS and NGC combined have certified twelve examples at MS63, with just one piece graded higher, an MS64. Population: 8 in 63, 1 finer (10/05).
