1870-CC$1> MS62 PCGS. 1870 saw the opening of the Carson City Mint, and the coins produced in this fabled facility's first year have proven to be as popular as they are rare, helped along in part by the fact that most such pieces were immediately placed into circulation and stayed there. Under 100,000 1870-CC coins were produced in all denominations, and more than half of this effort was expended on half dollars, a coin that is available in circulated grades, yet virtually unknown in Mint State. Indeed, the major grading services have combined to certify only six 1870-CC quarters, half dollars, half eagles, eagles, and double eagles total in Mint State grades. (The mint never produced quarter eagles and would not bother with dimes until 1871.) Those numismatists wishing to own a high grade 1870-CC coin would therefore do well to concentrate on the 1870-CC dollar, a coin that is by no means common, yet is nonetheless far more available in Mint State than other denominations bearing the same date. Liberty Seated dollar collectors, of course, have long been drawn to this date as an available representative of this mint.
This originally toned specimen is awash with golden and olive-tan coloration, with traces of russet peeking out from the rim. The surfaces are glassy smooth, showing marks consistent with the MS62 grade. The strike is reasonably strong, showing only a hint of weakness on stars 12 and 13. This is an excellent opportunity to add a Mint State example of this desirable date to your collection.
