<td colspan="3" class="tableCellMiddle">
The Carson City Mint (1870-1893) is probably the most popular coinage facility in the history of the United States. The Mint operated under extremely rustic conditions during the taming of the frontier, and it was almost totally dependent upon locally mined gold and silver bullion from the Comstock Lode and other Nevada mines. Most CC-mint issues in all series have very low mintages, and this is particularly true for those dates in the early 1870s. Not only did the Carson City Mint have to fight difficult conditions "on the ground" in Nevada, but also the hostility of many politicians in Washington who were constantly looking for excuses and/or opportunities to shut down the facility. Given the difficulty of its birth and the tumultuous events of its relatively short lifespan, it is a miracle that the Carson City Mint managed to place any coins into circulation. But it did, and its gold and silver pieces were eagerly sought in the commercial channels of the specie-starved Old West.
The first coins to bear the distinct double-C mintmark of Carson City were struck in 1870 in Quarter, Half Dollar, Silver Dollar, Half Eagle, Eagle and Double Eagle denominations. (The first Dimes would be forthcoming in 1871.) All 1870-CC issues are rare, key-date coins in their respective series, but the '70-CC Double Eagle stands out as a particularly important issue even in this highly select group. Rivaling only the 1870-CC Eagle for this honor, the 1870-CC is widely regarded as the rarest gold coin struck in the Carson City Mint. It is an eagerly sought issue at all levels of preservation that is always greeted with considerable fanfare offered either through auction or for private treaty purchase.
Federal records indicate that only 3,789 Double Eagles were struck in the Carson City Mint during 1870, and virtually all of those coins have since been lost. Writing in 2001 (<em>Gold Coins of the Carson City Mint</em>), Douglas Winter and James L. Halperin account for just 35-45 survivors in all grades. The authors further state that there are no Mint State examples known to exist.
At the Choice EF level, the coin that we are offering here qualifies as Condition Census for this rare and extremely challenging issue. All 1870-CC Double Eagles known to exist (even those that have been certified by PCGS and NGC) are impaired to one degree or another--a critical factor in assessing the desirability of this piece. Both sides are a bit glossy in texture, and they were lightly cleaned at one time. We absolutely stress, however, that the surfaces are among the most appealing that we have ever seen for a '70-CC Twenty. There is no heavy hairlining or excessive muting to the appearance, and even abrasions, although numerous, are mostly small in size and singularly inconspicuous.
The 1870-CC is also a notorious strike rarity, and all examples are softly impressed to some extent. This coin is no exception, the obverse overall lightly struck and the reverse with noticeable weakness at the letters AT in STATES. Wear is relatively light, however, and the devices certainly present very well in the context of both the issue and the assigned grade. The reverse eagle, in fact, is actually quite sharp.
Even rose-gold color rounds out an impressive list of positive attributes for this high-profile rarity from the Carson City Mint. The only pedigree marker of note is a moderate-size abrasion on the obverse over and above the hair bun at the back of Liberty's head. Really a very appealing example of the issue, and a coin that is destined for inclusion in the finest collection of CC-mint and/or Liberty gold coinage. Impressive!
