1870-CC 50C AU53 PCGS. The premier U.S. Half Dollar produced in the Carson City Mint, the 1870-CC is among the rarest issues in the Seated Liberty series with only 54,617 pieces struck. The grade distribution of the 90 1870-CC Halves in the Louisiana Hoard gives a good indication of the rarity of this date in the finer circulated grades: AG (6); Good (20); VG (29); Fine (7); VF (16); XF (9); AU (3). Randy Wiley and Bill Bugert (1993) assign this issue an R.6 rating in XF/AU, and we further note that NGC and PCGS have yet to certify a single example above the AU55 level of preservation (10/02). Fifteen years ago, the consignor of this coin was given the opportunity to select a single 1870-CC Half Dollar from the aforementioned Louisiana Hoard for inclusion in his personal collection. The owner, a Louisiana collector who purchased every '70-CC Half he came across for several years, was about to disperse the hoard. The consignor selected the present example, which he believes was, "without question, the best in the lot." He also opines that this coin is the third or fourth finest 1870-CC Seated Half known. It is also tied for second finest certified honors at PCGS. (NGC does not report a single coin finer than XF45.) A decent number (14%, to be exact) of extant '70-CC Halves display partial drapery below Liberty's right (facing) elbow, a feature that this coin exhibits. Streaks of orange-tan patina drift over otherwise slate-gray surfaces. Remnants of modest brightness are noted in the fields, but only at direct angles, and the overall definition is uncommonly bold for the issue. Even the BER in LIBERTY is free of the premature wear that is often associated with survivors of this delivery. Most of the abrasions that are present are wispy and well scattered, but we do note a reeding mark in the reverse field above the eagle's right (facing) wing that should serve as a useful pedigree marker. Our data indicates only three recent sales of 1870-CC Halves certified at the AU level by PCGS. Two of these are for the same coin: 1. Ex: Philadelphia 2000 Signature Sale (Heritage, 8/2000), lot 6003, where it realized $18,400; Long Beach Signature Sale--The Tommy Dorathy Collection of Seated Halves (Heritage, 10/2001), lot 6851, where it realized $16,675. AU50. 2. Ex: Dr. Jon Kardatzke Collection (Goldbergs, 2/2000), lot 1088, where it realized $27,600. AU55. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
