1870-CC[$5] AU58 PCGS.
1870-CC<$5> AU58 PCGS. Winter 1-A. Intermediate die state between State I and State II. Mintage of half eagles at the brand new Carson City Mint began on March 1 with an initial production of 400 coins. After that date, further half eagles were coined, and the total mintage for the year was pegged at 7,675 coins. Only about 50 or 60 examples have survived the decades since they were coined, and as most saw extensive use in western commerce, very few high quality examples still exist today. Perhaps only a dozen AU or finer coins are known, with the present specimen ranking among the top five or six. David Akers summed up the situation in very easy to understand terms: "From the standpoint of rarity according to average grade, the 1870-CC ranks number one in the entire 300 coin half eagle series."
Two die states are known from the single die pair utilized to strike all of these coins. The distinction between these states is limited to the quality of strike. Early (and more desirable) die states are very sharply defined, especially at the centers of each side. Later die states have a weakly defined central obverse and reverse, and in some cases, details of the eagle's neck are completely absent. We have described this example as an intermediate state that, while not fully struck, still shows considerable details at the central reverse, especially on the eagle's neck.
Aside from the very slight weakness of strike already mentioned, this is a wonderful representative of Abraham Curry's Mint in Carson City. For more on Abraham Curry, the founder of Carson City and her mint, the reader is directed to The Mint on Carson Street by Rusty Goe. The surfaces display light yellow-gold luster with slightly reflective fields. A few minor abrasions and other slight imperfections are noted; however, none of these take away from the exceptional aesthetic appeal. A thin line of lamination on the reverse extends from AM to the right wing.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
