1870-CC 25C --Improperly Cleaned--NCS. XF Details. The all-important key date to a Seated Liberty quarter set, the 1870-CC saw a paltry mintage of 8,340 coins in the premier year of coinage at the fabled Carson City Mint. Due to its high value, the 1870-CC is an issue for which authentication is mandatory, although two diagnostics show clearly on genuine coins. A short, straight die line appears beneath the top horizontal of the F in OF on the reverse, which touches the middle serif, and a diagonal die scratch is in the recess behind the eagle's heel. Larry Briggs depicts both in his 1991 Comprehensive Encyclopedia, where he comments, "Coins above VF are prohibitively rare with XF or better extremely rare--unknown in Unc." Since that time, however, NGC has certified a single MS64 piece, the Eliasberg coin, which sold for $187,000 in 1997. The present specimen offers pleasing, lightly hairlined fields that retain considerable luster and immense eye appeal. The obverse is a uniform aqua-green while the reverse offer pink and aqua hues. Well struck save for Liberty's head and the upper eagle wings. A more-recent authority, Rusty Goe's The Mint on Carson Street, (2003), estimates two Mint State survivors, with 39 to 49 pieces in all grades and about eight to 11 pieces in XF to AU. Alert Seated Liberty quarter specialists will need no further explication.
From The Southland Collection.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
