1870-CC<25C> AU50 NGC. The 1870-CC is the key date in the Seated Liberty quarter series, with the exception of the unique 1866 No Motto and virtually uncollectible 1873-CC No Arrows issues. Briggs states that, "coins above VF are prohibitively rare, with XF or better extremely rare - unknown in UNC." After Briggs' book was released, the Eliasberg specimen, sold uncertified, was cataloged as "MS64 Prooflike" in 1997, no small tribute to the quality of Mr. Eliasberg's numismatic achievements. PCGS has certified one coin as MS64, which may or may not be the same coin. Beyond that, every 1870-CC quarter known is in circulated grades, and the majority certified are in the Fine to XF range. With only three pieces certified in finer grades by both major services combined (8/06), the present AU50 specimen must be considered to be a member of the Condition Census for the date.
In purely aesthetic terms, this is quite an attractive coin. The coin is well struck, an unusual condition for early Carson City issues, but not unusual for this date. The planchet flaws that are so often evident are missing with the exception of an impurity at 12 o'clock on the obverse rim which will likely serve as a pedigree marker. No trace of porosity is evident. As expected for the grade, there is light wear over a number of highpoints, yet the details of this coin are virtually complete. The surfaces are deeply toned to a rose and deep olive mix, and enough luster remains in the recessed areas to hint at what must once have a prooflike surface.
Dedicated Seated Liberty quarter collectors might have to wait for many years to have the chance to acquire another example of this key date in such nice condition. The high bidder for this coin will not be disappointed.
