1870-CC $20 XF45 NGC.
1870-CC $20 XF45 NGC.<p>The 1870-CC Double Eagle is simply the rarest and most popular Carson City gold coin. An estimated 35-45 pieces are known with 9-11 grading Extremely Fine and another three or four that grade AU 50. According to the Winter/Halperin 2001 Condition Census, this coin is tied with a small number of others as one of the finest examples known. The price level of the 1870-CC Double Eagle has increased considerably over the past decade. In the mid-1990s, a small number of average quality pieces were available in the $30,000-40,000 price range. And at that time, they were not particularly easy to sell. Soon afterward, Liberty Head Double Eagles and all Carson City gold coinage was "discovered" and many new collectors entered the market. As a number of sets approached completion, everyone needed an 1870-CC. With little warning, any presentable example of this date suddenly became an easy sale in the $90,000-110,000 range. We have auctioned more than our share of 1870-CC Double Eagles over the past two years, including examples in the November 2001 Santa Clara (NGC VF25, realized $89,125), February 2001 Long Beach (ANACS AU details with graffiti, net XF40, realized $86,250), and the 1999 ANA (PCGS XF45, realized $92,000). This NGC XF45 could well be the nicest of the four coins and we expect it will generate a great deal of interest when it is offered. One of the characteristics of this issue is softer definition on the obverse than the reverse. The reverse is certainly sharp enough for an XF45, and judging from the amount of luster remaining this piece is accurately graded. Unlike most 1870-CC Twenties, however, the surfaces are not scuffy. In fact, there are no more abrasions on this piece than one would expect for any other Choice XF Double Eagle from another mint. Little evidence of the original prooflike finish remains, and each side shows rich, original reddish patina. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium.
