It is also the first double eagle struck in the Carson City Mint and a spectacular rarity that is among the most widely acclaimed issues in the entire series of Liberty twenties. It is surpassed in overall rarity only by the ultra-rare 1861 Paquet, the 1856-O, and the business strikes of 1882 and 1886, but none of these important issues garner more attention than is generated by the appearance of an 1870-CC. Only 3,789 pieces were originally produced and reliable estimates place the number of survivors in the neighborhood of 45 pieces.<BR>From the standpoint of condition rarity, the '70-CC ranks first in the series, with most known examples, condition-wise, falling in line with the present example. Both obverse and reverse are light in color and a trifle bright, with softness beyond wear on the obverse stars. A number of small to medium sized contact marks are consistent with a large gold coin that saw what was obviously years of circulation. Two die pairings were used for the 1870-CC, this being the Winter-Cutler 1-A die variety, identifiable by the size of the date and the placement of the mintmark above the N in TWENTY. We are indeed fortunate to offer our third 1870-CC twenty in the past three sales, and we expect interest again to be very high for this highly sought-after rarity.<BR><I>From a Magnificent Collection of Double Eagles.</B></I> </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Date</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Service</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Price</B></TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>11/15/2001</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$89,125.00</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. </span></font></tr></table></td></tr></table>
