1870-CC<$10> XF45 PCGS. Winter-1A. "Of the three gold denominations struck by the Carson City mint, the ten-dollar gold piece or eagle series is the most difficult to collection." So wrote Douglas Winter in Gold Coins of the Carson City Mint, which we published in 2001. Factor in the overall rarity, with this coin ranked first, and you have an extremely important opportunity. Winter estimated that only 35 to 45 examples of this issue are known, from a mintage of 5,908 coins. This is a very low survival rate, with these coins circulating extensively in the West after they were minted. This issue is approximately tied with the 1870-CC double eagle for honors as the rarest single coinage issue from this mint. It is also the first gold issue struck in Carson City. Mintage of the eagles began on February 17 of that year, while the first half eagles were coined on March 1, and the first double eagles on March 10, 1870. Further, this was described as a "curiously overlooked" issue.
Both surfaces have pale yellow-gold surfaces with a hint of orange color. The fields are very lightly abraded. All design features are very sharply defined, while the left-hand C in the mintmark is virtually illegible.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
