1870-CC<$10> XF45 NGC. Variety 1-A, Die State I. According to noted branch mint gold expert Douglas Winter, the 1870-CC is not only the rarest Carson City eagle, but it is eclipsed only by the 1870-CC double eagle as the rarest gold issue from that mint. Only 5,908 pieces were struck. Most survivors circulated heavily, and the majority are in grades below XF. Relatively sharp for the grade, with pleasing plumage detail within the wings. Attractive reddish-gold coloration adorns each side of the coin. Softly struck on the obverse stars, as well as the eagle's talons and arrow fletchings, with slight, even wear on the central highpoints of the design. Perhaps surprisingly for such a low mintage issue, there are two distinct die states known for the 1870-CC Liberty eagle. This appears to be an example of Winter's Die State I, with the centers mostly well impressed.
From The Clifton Rodenburg Collection.
