1870-CC $10 XF40 NGC. Winter 1-A. Perhaps surprisingly for a low mintage (5,908 pieces) issue, there are two known die marriage for the 1870-CC Liberty Eagle. These are distinguishable by the relative placement of the two Cs in the mintmark: Winter 1-A displays a virtually even mintmark, while Winter 1-B exhibits a slanting mintmark with the first C sharply higher than the second. This is the premier U.S. Eagle produced at the Carson City Mint. A low mintage date, the 1870-CC is the rarest Ten Dollar gold piece struck at the Nevada coinage facility. It also rivals the 1870-CC Double Eagle for rarest honors among all CC-mint gold coins. We are aware of several '70-CC Eagles certified at the XF40 level, all of which are just below Condition Census standing. One of the NGC examples may be the present coin: 1. Ex: Superior's sale of 5/2001, lot 4137, where it realized $16,675. An NGC example. 2. Ex: Tony Terranova; Goldbergs' sale of 6/2000, lot 1525, where it realized $18,400. Certified by PCGS. 3. Ex: Bowers and Merena's sale of 5/1999, lot 2425, where it realized $19,550; New Jersey collection, 11/1998; Dr. Richard Appel. Slabbed by NGC. 4. Ex: Northern California collection; Doug Winter; Nevada collection; Winthrop Carner; Stack's sale of 9/1995, lot 968, where it realized $16,500; Stack's sale of 4/1987, lot 1104; Stack's sale of 10/1971, lot 1069. A PCGS-certified example, and the plate coin in the 2001 book Gold Coins of the Carson City Mint by Doug Winter and Jim Halperin. 5. Ex: Tahoe collection; Heritage's sale of 10/1995, lot 6353, where it realized $22,000; Warren Miller Collection. Another PCGS example. 6. Ex: Orange County collection duplicate; Doug Winter / Lee Minshull; Dr. Larry Cutler. Certified by NGC, and the plate coin in the 1994 book Gold Coins of the Old West: The Carson City Mint 1870-1893 by Doug Winter and Dr. Larry Cutler. 7. Private collection; Eastern dealer; Charley Tuppen Collection; possibly Bowers and Merena's sale of 11/1992, 1120, where it realized $10,450. Another NGC-certified specimen. 8. Ex: Tennessee collection; Jay Parrino's The Mint; Bowers and Merena's sale of 10/1999, lot 1520, where it realized $ 25,300; Harry W. Bass, Jr. Collection; Rarcoa 8/24/1973. Encapsulated by PCGS. 9. Ex: Washington, D.C. collection; Doug Winter 1998. Graded by NGC.The present example is identifiable by a trio of small retained laminations (as produced) in the obverse field around stars 5 and 6. The surfaces are richly toned in reddish-gold hues with a little bit of copper-gold tinting. A pleasingly original coin, both sides are lightly and evenly worn with scattered abrasions from time spent in circulation. Although the 1872-CC, 1873-CC, 1876-CC, 1877-CC, 1878-CC, and 1879-CC all boast lower mintages, the 1870-CC is the undisputed "King" of the Carson City Tens. From the Ashland City Collection.
