1870-CC<$10>--Cleaned--ANACS. AU50 Details. Variety 1-A. It is curious that this issue had a mintage of only 5,908 pieces, yet two reverse dies were used. On this reverse variant the mintmark slants downward gently, rather than radically as on the 2-B variety. While several Carson City tens have a lower mintage than the 1870-CC, this is still the undisputed key to the series. In fact, it is just marginally more available than the legendary 1870-CC double eagle. Winter estimates that only 35 to 45 pieces exist today in all grades. The vast majority of known specimens are in the VF grade range with only 9-11 coins estimated in XF and four in AU. From a details point-of-view this piece would definitely qualify as a Condition Census coin. However, because of the cleaning it probably does not qualify. That being said, this is a "new" coin to the collecting community. This piece is part of an old-time collection and many of the coins are accompanied by flips from the late '40s and early '50s. The surfaces are subdued in appearance with hazy gray-golden patina and a dash of brightness in front of Liberty's face. Softly struck in the centers, as always, the peripheries are strongly defined with many stars showing full or partial radials. Each side shows numerous small abrasions, but there are none that are of singular importance that would aid in tracing the pedigree of this important coin.
From The Lewis (Tahoe) Collection.
