1870 Assay Commission Medal. Without Director's Name. PR64 Brown Uncertified. Julian AC-10, R.5. Bronze, 33.6 mm., 330.3 grains. Two varieties of 1870 medals are known, either with or without J. POLLOCK DIRECTOR in the exergual area of the obverse. Archimedes is posing in a doorway with a stool to the right and a bathtub to the left. A few small clouds have been added, just inside the curve of the arch. Julian noted that the bathtub is a symbol for Archimedes' "discovery of the specific gravity test for purity of precious metals." The reverse has a wreath around the three line inscription ANNUAL ASSAY 1871. The top of the wreath is closed by an ornate scroll. This is a splendid near-Gem with rich mahogany surfaces and satiny fields. A tiny rim tick at 6 o'clock on the obverse is the only identifying characteristic.
