<B>1870 $5 AU50 PCGS.</B></I> The 1870 half eagle, with a business strike mintage of 4,000 pieces, is a rare date. Relatively few examples have been certified, including a mere one coin in Mint State (a PCGS MS61). Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (2006) write that "The circulation-strike Philadelphia issues were largely ignored by early collectors, who preferred Proof examples." Bright, peach-gold surfaces on this AU50 specimen are lightly abraded, and the design elements are well brought up.
