1870 3CS PR68 NGC. As of (4/07), the present lot is the single finest certified 1870 three cent silver. The PR68 grade sets a remarkably high standard for a 19th century proof coin, but this magnificent specimen is equal to the task. Cobalt-blue centers are bounded by lighter sun-gold and mauve-pink bands. Inspection of the flashy mirrored fields beneath a loupe cannot locate any hairlines, and the strike is intricate save for one or two tiny portions of the shield border. The top of the D in UNITED is absent, as made from a lapped die. Business strike and proof production combined for just 4,000 pieces, which make the 1870 the lowest mintage date of the series to that point. The 1872 and 1873 have even lower mintages, a confirmation that the type had been made unnecessary by the more heavily produced three cent nickel.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
