1870 $3 MS63 PCGS. An offbeat denomination that wore out its welcome decades before its demise, the three dollar gold coin lingered for 35 years, with the vast majority of issues consisting of fewer than 10,000 pieces. Commercial demand for such pieces was low; Garrett and Guth (2006) quote Bowers: "Coins of this denomination circulated in the East and Midwest until 1861, after which they disappeared forever, although small quantities continued to be made ... "
This 1870 piece comes from the middle years of the denomination, and the issue's production of only 3,500 pieces is consistent with the pattern of low mintages. The honey-gold fields offer distinct reflectivity with a touch of haze at the margins, and the devices are well-defined overall. Highly attractive despite the light, scattered abrasions that account for the grade. Population: 6 in 63, 2 finer (7/07).

Coin Engraver: James B.
