1870 $20 MS61 NGC.<p>The 1870 is another "sleeper" date within the Type Two series. It is second to the 1868 as the scarcest Type Two Double Eagle from Philadelphia and is actually a scarcer coin than a number of the more heralded Carson City issues from the early to mid 1870s. The typical 1870 is found with considerable wear and poor eye appeal. It is scarce in the lower About Uncirculated grades, very scarce in AU 55, and rare in AU 58. This is a sharply struck example that has bright, semi-prooflike fields and several abrasions on the obverse, most of which are concentrated on the face of Liberty. There are 10-15 pieces known in Uncirculated and we have only seen two or three that were better than MS60. There were no high grade 1870 Double Eagles in the Dallas Bank Collection or Bass sales and this NGC MS61 is among the finest available to collectors in years.
