1870 $2 1/2 PR66 Ultra Cameo NGC. The last 30 years have been described as a period of renaissance in the numismatic field, with more research conducted during three decades than in all previous years combined. Despite the quantity and depth of research, the field of proof gold coinage, especially of the 19th century issues, remains a relatively unstudied aspect of American numismatics.
The Philadelphia Mint only struck 35 proof quarter eagles in 1870, and they were presumably all sold. In 1977, Breen described just one variety, with the date high and the left base of the 1 right of the left edge [of a dentil]. The mintage was in two batches, 25 that were issued as part of gold proof sets on February 3, the other 10 on June 1. He also commented that less than 20 survive.
We conducted an extensive auction catalog search of proof gold coins, and only located about 15 auction appearances of a proof example, several being reappearances of the same coin. Based on our own survey, we believe the true population of this issue is only about 10 coins. We are aware of six different Choice or Gem proofs, and four or five others in lower grades. This example seems to be the finest of those that are known, but it does not match any of the others. Of course, plate matching proof gold, especially Gem proof gold, is one of the greatest numismatic challenges.
Both sides have radiant yellow luster with extraordinary contrast. The devices are crisply detailed and brilliant with a full quota of mint frost. The fields are deeply mirrored. A tiny flake inside star 12 appears to be the only pedigree marker. An extraordinary Ultra Cameo Premium Gem proof.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
