1870<$10> Ten Dollar, Judd-1035, Pollock-1170, R.8, PR66 Brown NGC. Both the obverse and reverse are struck with the regular issue design for 1870 ten dollar gold coins. Struck in copper with a reeded edge. Both sides exhibit a rich chocolate-brown appearance with a thin overlay of turquoise-blue patina that is most attractive as the coin turns under a light source. There are no notable defects or marks. The only pedigree identifier is a small carbon spot on Liberty's upper hair bun. Since this exceedingly rare pattern is listed as R.8, there are probably only two known examples, both of which have now been offered by Heritage Auction Galleries--the other was a Proof 60 we sold in 1997. A truly remarkable opportunity for the pattern enthusiast.
