<B>1869-S $20 MS61 PCGS.</B></I> Despite its ample mintage, this issue, like most S-mint Type Two double eagles, presents a challenge in higher grades. The vast majority of pieces encountered heavy circulation, and Very Fine and Extremely Fine pieces vastly outnumber their betters. Garrett and Guth (2006) pay the 1869-S a strong compliment: "Many great collections of the past have lacked the date in Uncirculated condition."<BR> The double eagle offered here is a noteworthy Mint State example of this popular Type Two issue. The overall level of detail is significantly above-average, though slight softness is noted on the peripheral obverse stars. The vivid orange-gold surfaces show pleasing luster and light, scattered abrasions that account for the grade. Population: 25 in 61, 9 finer (7/07).<BR><BR><B>Coin Engraver:</B> James B.
