1869-S $20 MS61 NGC. A fully original Mint State piece with brilliant yellow-gold luster, intermingled with deep gray-gold toning, especially on the highpoints of the design. The original mintage of this issue was substantial, numbering just under 700,000 coins, However, nearly every one of those pieces entered circulation at the time, with few that have survived in Mint State quality. Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth write: "The 1869-S double eagle was struck in ample numbers, and today the date is plentiful in grades of Very Fine or Extremely Fine." Most of the coins that have survived are in lower grades of MS60 or MS61, such as this example. Census: 28 in 61, 21 finer (10/07).

Coin Engraver: James B.
