1869-S $20 AU55 NGC. Although the San Francisco Mint struck more than two thirds of a million double eagles in 1869, those coins were strictly regarded as bullion, and most were eventually melted. Only a small percentage of the production has survived with noticeable remaining luster. This nicely struck example has pleasing luster for the AU55 level, and is attractive despite concealed marks on the shield lines.

Coin Engraver: James B.
