1869-S $2 1/2 MS64 NGC. This is a somewhat scarcer S-mint quarter eagle issue, with a mintage of just 29,500 pieces. Akers observed that this date is one of the most poorly struck of all San Francisco quarter eagles, saying that examples of the issue are difficult for nonspecialists to grade due to its typically soft highpoint details.
This near-Gem is conditionally scarce and is one of only four '69-S quarter eagles to be certified MS64 by the two major grading services. Just one Gem has been encapsulated at NGC, and two Premium Gems have been identified as such by PCGS (12/07). Rich luster and pleasing orange-peach coloration are observed on both sides. A few wispy marks are noted in the fields. A desirable and highly attractive example of this challenging date.

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
