1869 S$1 PR67 NGC. Ex: P. Kaufman. The Philadelphia Mint used three different obverse dies to deliver 600 proof Seated Dollars in 1869. Survivors are most easily attributable by the orientation of the shield point relative to the 1 in the date; on the present example it points to the left edge of the upright. The importance of this coin is twofold. First, it is one of only five so graded examples at NGC and PCGS combined, and it is unsurpassed at either service (10/02). Secondly, this Superb quality proof is among the finest representatives of the 1869 Seated Dollar. Most of the 423,700 business strikes originally produced were exported to the Orient with the result that Mint State survivors are scarce to rare in all grades. The obverse is untoned just below the center with mottled swirls of rich antique-copper and lavender-gray patina, as well as pink and golden-blue undertones, radiating out toward the rims. The same colors are seen on the reverse, but they are more irregular in distribution. An obviously powerful impression has brought up full detail over every element of the design. We last offered a similar graded proof 1869 Silver Dollar as lot 6963 in our January 1999 FUN Signature Sale. That coin traded hands for $26,450.From the Philip Kaufman Collection.
