1869<S$1> MS65 PCGS. While more frequently encountered than the Civil War dates earlier in the decade, the mintage of more than 400,000 pieces is quite misleading as many 1869 Dollars were presumably held in Treasury vaults and melted under authority of the Pittman Act of 1918.
At first glance, one will easily confuse this coin as being a proof with the deeply reflective qualities visible in the fields, although the PCGS insert is not labeled "prooflike." The obverse essentially untoned, however the reverse sports a border of purple-lilac color. The strike is strong throughout and, in fact, almost complete even on the highest portions of the design. A few small abrasions hardly detract. Population: 2 in 65, 2 finer (6/05).
Ex: Oliver Jung Collection (American Numismatic Rarities, 7/04), lot 76, which realized $32,200.
